How Cute Is Macie?!?

| 1 Comment | No TrackBacks
Take a look at this cute picture! Macie is a young rat terrier who had a rough start in life but is now ready for her forever home. She plays rough and tough and then sacks out--on her foster dog sister--for her afternoon nap. Please think about adopting little Macie!Macie 10.jpg

Black Dog Syndrome

Did you know that Black Dogs are generally the last to be adopted and are euthanised in shelters in much larger numbers than dogs of other colors? People may consider them too "plain", think they are menacing, or simply don't notice them because their dark color makes them disappear in their kennels. Those involved in animal welfare have dubbed this phenomena "Black Dog Syndrome."

According to Wikipedia, Black Dog Syndrome is defined as "the low adoption and high euthanasia rate of black dogs in shelters. Black dogs are often the last to be adopted from shelters."

The above information was pulled directly from www.startseeingblackdogs.com Please take a look at the black dogs on our website so then don't end up homeless for months and so we can take in more black dogs from kill pounds.

HHR Adopter Writes Story

One of our adopters recently wrote an article for The Mettle, a one time news magazine about how the recession is affecting lives, especially of Gen Y. Please check out Diane White's article about how she adopted her dog Taz from HHR, and some comments from yours truly.

Sad Day Today

Lilypug.jpgToday is a sad day--our little pregnant puppy mill pug rescued on March 9, 2009 from the semi-annual Puppy Mill Auction in Thorpe, Wisconsin died today. This poor little dog, who was subjected to repeated breeding despite being a very small pug, came to the auction already pregnant. We found out that she had previously required a c-section and took her to the vet for evaluation last week. She was doing fine at that time, but over the weekend her appetite fell off and she was taken to the vet again today. The vet determined that she had a uterine infection and despite an emergency c-section and aggressive care, Lily died. Four of her five puppies survived only a short time as they were premature by about 5 days. As of this writing one puppy is still alive but the outcome doesn't look good. THANKS TO THE AMISH PUPPY MILLERS WHO TREAT DOGS LIKE LIVESTOCK, LILY PAID WITH HER LIFE AND THE LIVES OF HER PRECIOUS PUPPIES. If you would like to help offset the cost of her care and to help us rescue more dogs like Lily, please go to the Donate button on our website. All donations are tax deductible.

Percy Found His Forever Home!

Percy corgi 1.jpg
Percy is a 3 year old purebred Cardigan Welsh Corgi (the kind with the tail) who was given to rescue when he became diabetic and his family was unable to meet his needs. Fortunately it was easy to get Percy regulated on insulin twice daily, and today he went to his new home near Omaha! He is a wonderful, well balanced dog who loves everyone he meets. He really liked playing with our dog Ranger while he was fostered at my house, and Ranger will miss him a lot and so will we. HAVE A GREAT LIFE PERCY!

In 2008 we rehomed 487 dogs!

In reviewing end of year numbers, I learned that in 2008 our wonderful team of volunteers and fosters rehomed 487 dogs! Most of these dogs came from high kill shelters and would have been gassed had they not been rescued. About 50 dogs were surrendered by owners who couldn't keep them, in most cases due to the housing crisis. A few dogs were surrendered when elderly owners died or went into care facilities. Thanks to all our great fosters for helping so many dogs get new families and homes!  LP
